Health Clinic and Safety Assessment

SWITCH BC is coming to qathet on September 15-17, offering confidential on-site clinic health and safety assessments.

The program helps clinics strengthen occupational health and safety practices and meet regulatory requirements.

A lead physician will need to be available for 15-20 minutes of the 90-minute assessment to hear the summary of findings.

Dr. Slivko Complete Leader Program

Congratulations to Dr. Slivko on completing the FPSC Leadership and Management Development Program — a provincial program that helps physicians build practical leadership, management, and collaboration skills to strengthen healthcare teams and systems.

Recruitment

Dr. Sally Watson, Physician Recruitment Lead and Carly Martin, qDoFP Recruitment, Retention and Retirement Lead, represented qathet at UBC Scholars' Day on June 11, 2026.

They connected with a number of 1st and 2nd-year residents about locuming in qathet, as well as several IMGs in the program who would be eligible to complete their return of service in our community starting summer 2027.

qathet has three placements for the 2027 cohort at Family Tree Health, Marine Medical, and Powell River Medical Clinic.

qathet Attachment Update

There is currently a backlog of Priority Attachment Referrals. As a result, wait times for attachment are longer than usual.

Long Term Care: Best Practices Expectations

The Long-Term Care Initiative (LTCI) supports high-quality long-term care through five Best Practices to reduce unnecessary hospital transfers, improve the patient and provider experience, and reduce costs by delivering better care.

In previous months, we have looked at Proactive Site Visits, 24/7 Availability and Attendance at Care Conferences. July's focus is on Meaningful Medication Review.

Best Practice 5: Meaningful Medication Review

Medication reviews play a key role in patient safety and quality of life.

• Semi-annual reviews are completed with the pharmacist, nursing staff, and SDM/family (with follow-up communication if they cannot attend).
• One medication review is coordinated for the annual care conference.

POCUS Case Rounds

A patient presented with vaginal bleeding at approximately 10 weeks' gestation on a Friday. Formal ultrasound was not available until Monday, and the patient was highly anxious.

Using office POCUS, the clinician confirmed a viable intrauterine pregnancy with visible fetal cardiac activity—providing immediate reassurance and allowing plans for confirmatory imaging early the following week.

PCN Updates

Thank You For Your Input!

Thank you to all members who provided input on future PCN staffing priorities. Through provider and community surveys, both counselling services and resource navigation emerged as the most needed services.

In response, the qathet PCN is expanding its social work team to 3.3 FTE Social Workers to support patients with counselling, resource navigation, and related psychosocial needs.

Stay tuned for future hiring announcements and additional service enhancements.
