Projects and Support
The qathet Division of Family Practice has championed community projects that directly impact local healthcare.
Several of these local projects have been recognized at the provincial level and serve as a guide for other Divisions across British Columbia. Many have also become long-term supports for the community and family physicians.
We are pleased to share with you current and past community projects.
Current Projects and Support
Recruitment, Retention, and Retirement
Physician lead: Dr. Watson
Staff lead: Carly Martin
Purpose: To attract new physicians to practice in qathet and maintain a stable community of physicians through locum support, social opportunities and career transitions.
Primary Care Network
Physician lead: Dr. van Zyl
Staff lead: Megan Sloan
Purpose: To increase access to coordinated, comprehensive, and equity-based primary care by adding new interdisciplinary clinicians to family physician and nurse practitioner clinic teams.
Local CPD/CME
Physician advisors: Dr. Slivko and Dr. Yahaya
Staff lead: Ciara McLeod
Purpose: To strengthen collegial connections and shared learning among local care providers through interactive, locally relevant education that reflects community needs and realities.
Sharps
Staff lead: Crystal Artindale
Purpose: To help medical clinics dispose of sharps by offering a free annual disposal service.
Inpatient Care
Physician lead: Dr. Marceniuk
Staff lead: Christien Kaaij
Purpose: To develop a program for unassigned inpatient care and facilitate a seamless transition to a hospitalist program.
Long Term Care Initiative
Physician lead: Dr. Odoemelam

Purpose: To collaborate on identifying and implementing quality improvement and learning activities involving family physicians acting as Most Responsible Person (MRP) in Long Term Care (LTC) facilities.

Purpose: To connect residents with local primary care providers through the Health Connect Registry (HCR) and partnerships with clinics to ensure everyone in our community has access to care.
Advocacy

Purpose: To influence local healthcare policies and decision-making that improve patient and family physician satisfaction.
MOA Network

Purpose: To host events that offer up-to-date information on clinic tools while fostering connection, learning, and collegiality across clinics.
Emergency Preparedness
Staff lead: Guy Chartier
Purpose: To provide as-needed support for clinic emergencies in the event of an environmental disaster or other emergency. Contact us to assess the situation and identify areas of support.
Community Resources

Purpose: To ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness of programs, resources, and service listings for local organizations, and increase awareness of services with Division members and the community.
Practice Support
Staff lead: Brooke Taylor
Purpose: To connect family physicians with DTO and PSP resources to optimize EMRs, streamline workflows, reduce administrative burden, and strengthen team-based care.
Clinical Space
Staff lead: Christien Kaaij
Purpose: To inform long-term primary care planning by assessing current and future clinical space needs and identifying opportunities to support sustainable, team-based care in qathet.
Primary Care Access
Staff Lead: Christien Kaaij
Purpose: To gain insight into primary care access beyond availability. By analyzing data from multiple sources, including local healthcare providers and community surveys, the study aims to identify barriers to care.
